چکیده

Radioactive source signal measurements are Poisson distributed due to the underlying radiation process. This fact, coupled with the ubiquitous normally occurring radioactive materials (NORM), makes it challenging to localize or track a radioactive source or target accurately. This leads to the necessity to either use highly accurate sensors to minimize measurement noise or many less accurate sensors whose measurements are averaged to minimize the noise. The cost associated with highly accurate sensors places a bound on the number that can realistically be deployed. Similarly, the degree of inaccuracy in cheap sensors also places a lower bound on the number of sensors needed to achieve realistic estimates of location or trajectory of a radioactive source in order to achieve reasonable error margins. We first consider the use of the smallest number of highly accurate sensors to localize radioactive sources. The novel ideas and algorithms we develop use no more than the minimum number of sensors required by triangulation based algorithms but avoid all the pitfalls manifest with triangulation based algorithms such as multiple local minima and slow convergence rate from algorithm reinitialization. Under the general assumption that we have a priori knowledge of the statistics of the intensity of the source, we show that if the source or target is known to be in one open half plane, then N sensors are enough to guarantee a unique solution, N being the dimension of the search space. If the assumptions are tightened such that the source or target lies in the open convex hull of the sensors, then N + 1 sensors are required. Suppose we

A Novel Sampling Approach in GNSS-RO Receivers with Open Loop Tracking Method

Propagation of radio occultation (RO) signals through the lower troposphere results in high phase acceleration and low signal to noise ratio signal. The excess Doppler estimation accuracy in lower troposphere is very important in receiving RO signals which can be estimated by sliding window spectral analysis. To do this, various frequency estimation methods such as MUSIC and ESPRIT can be adopt...

A Novel Robust Adaptive Trajectory Tracking in Robot Manipulators

In this paper, a novel adaptive sliding mode control for rigid robot manipulators is proposed. In the proposed system, since there may exist explicit unknown parameters and perturbations, a Lyapunov based approach is presented to increase system robustness, even in presence of arbitrarily large (but not infinite) discontinuous perturbations. To control and track the robot, a continuous controll...

Multiple Target Tracking in Wireless Sensor Networks Based on Sensor Grouping and Hybrid Iterative-Heuristic Optimization

A novel hybrid method for tracking multiple indistinguishable maneuvering targets using a wireless sensor network is introduced in this paper. The problem of tracking the location of targets is formulated as a Maximum Likelihood Estimation. We propose a hybrid optimization method, which consists of an iterative and a heuristic search method, for finding the location of targets simultaneously. T...

A Novel Method for Estimation of The Fundamental Parameters of Distorted Single Phase Signals

This paper proposes a new method for parameter estimation of distorted single phase signals, through an improved demodulation-based phase tracking incorporated with a frequency adaptation mechanism. The simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method compared to the conventional SOGI (Second-Order Generalized Integrator)-based approach, in spite of the dc-offset and harmon...

Least squares estimation techniques for position tracking of radioactive sources

This paper describes least squares estimation algorithms used for tracking the physical location of radioactive sources in real-time as they are moved around in a facility. We present both recursive and moving horizon nonlinear least squares estimation algorithms that consider both the change in the source location and the deviation between measurements and model predictions. The measurements u...
